Well, it supports more than 9 million American jobs. It makes a significant economic contribution as a United States employer. Millions of dollars in American goods and services are purchased nationwide to help fuel its daily operations.
The most recent year for which data is available, 2007, shows the oil and gas industry contributing one trillion dollars to the United States economy. The industry is making a 7.5 percent contribution to the nation’s gross domestic product! America’s oil and gas industry touches American lives everywhere! For example:
- Farmers use fertilizer made from natural gas.
- Diesel fuel keeps 18 wheeler trucks moving on America’s highways. Truckers are employed by trucking companies. They deliver a variety of goods to stores across the United States.
- A variety of businesses utilize oil and gas. They use petroleum products to manufacture goods that are purchased and used by Americans nationwide.
- Many oil and gas companies employ hundreds of men and women. They provide support services for the industry. Employees earn income to support their families!
When you buy a loaf of bread, purchase an appliance or electronic gadget, drive a car, or ride a bicycle, consider yourself a part of the oil and gas industry. Overall, it has something to do with everything we do, one way or another. It is indirectly keeping millions of men and women employed in jobs coast to coast!
